PROJECTS AND INSTALLS

IC 208 Mobile install

Here are some after shots of my latest install in the work truck. Here I installed a quick release bracket to make transferring the radio  between the truck and car simple.

iCOM 706 Fan Mod

Here is a simple fan mod you can do to add a second fan to the icom 706mkIIg or other similar 706 icom's. This fan mod will add additional cooling to the rig and will run constantly when the rig is powered up.

I used a 12VDC 40mm cooling fan which I attached to the fins on the back of the radio with plastic wall anchors. This holds he fan very snug and without drilling any holes.
Molex power connectors, (Digi-key part numbers, WM1326-ND, plug and WM1333-ND, receptacle). The wire crimp connectors, (WM1102-ND, male and WM1103-ND, female).
Total cost about 12.00.

After I inserted the wires into the molex connectors, I secured them with electrical tape. Since I plan on plugging and unplugging as needed, I figured this would add to the durability and keep the wires more stable.
I suppose you can do one up on this mod and add a switch.

The tuner or other accessory can still be used while the fan is plugged in.

Here is the completed mod. A piece of electrical tape wraped around the fan keeps the wires neatly in place.

This mod would be best if youre able to keep the rig away from ears shot. It runs a bit loud. However for those long qso's, it's a great addition to the existing built in automatic fan of the icom 706 mkIIG.

QTH Antenna Install

Here are some photos of my long awaited antenna mast installation. Attic space was getting a little hard to find with antennas and cables so the next logical move was to the great outdoors.

Only able to "rough in" at this point, no antenna or cables yet, just mounted the mast, box and ground cable.

The two ground rod clamps I bought were too small for my 4 AWG wire and I really didn't feel like making yet another trip to Home Depot. So I was able to dig up a couple of left overs which seemed to do the trick.

All cables connected with about 5 ft of extra cable. This way I can add another mast section later on. Right now we are only 10 ft above the roof peak.
